I did not do the Ritchie reading, but I like how Kate explained the overall structure of the reading. This type of structure (a large corpus of technical jargon interspersed with some fond musings) ties in really well to one of the themes of our class: the social implications of technology. To provide meaning to this technological history, Ritchie has to contextualize it with some information on the actual people who were doing this work at Bell Labs. This addition provides that kind of ‘human element’ that we have talked about as central to Computer Science.
